Susun Weed Workshops

(1.5 - 3 hours in length)

Amazing Artemisias

Artemis -- Goddess of the herbalist -- gives her name to a genus of marvelously aromatic, safely psychedelic, highly medicinal, dazzlingly decorative, and more-or-less edible plants. We'll take a shamanic journey into Artemis's sacred woods and come home with lots of uses for cronewort, wormwood, sweet annie, tarragon, and southernwood.

Healthy Breasts - in Our Own Hands

If you're interested in keeping your breasts healthy, or in finding ways to deal with breast cancer wholistically, join us for an inspiring and educational talk. We'll look at simple herbs and foods, as well as easy lifestyle changes, that can protect your breasts. We'll also examine the risks of screening mammographs and biopsies, and talk about herbs that complement orthodox treatments (and keep you free of side-effects). Christiane Northrup, M.D. (author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) says: "Here is the information and spirit that our hearts and breasts have needed for a very long time: the voice of women's wisdom."

Calm Down

In an ever anxious world, what in the world can we do to keep our cool and save our nerves? Please meet my calming allies: skullcap, passionflower, motherwort, oatstraw, kava kava, lemon balm, and chickweed. We will also explore several breath exercises designed to free us from fear and turn our turmoil into action.

The Cervix - Gateway of Life

Have you ever seen your cervix? How do you keep it healthy? Did you know that 300,000 women worldwide and 4000 American women die yearly from cervical cancer? Can regular Pap smears save us? Or do they draw us in to be overtreated for non-threatening conditions? Or do they miss cancer? Whatever your age or sexual inclinations, cervical health and cervical politics affect you. This workshop includes clear information on, and remedies for, vaginal warts, HPV, and cervical dysplasia, as well as things to avoid if you have cervical cancer. Time permitting, we will look at a cervix or two.

Chronic Problems, the Wise Woman Way

Wise Women have remarkably effective ways of dealing with asthma, allergies, arthritis, shingles, headaches, back pain, cysts, chronic fatigue, and candida overgrowth. In this lively session we will learn about herbal remedies that nourish change and open the door to health.

Down There the Wise Woman Way

Is your down there a source of pleasure or pain? Is your vulva happy? Are you satisfied with your orgasmic capacity? As I move into the final rewrite for my next book ? Down There the Wise Woman Way, A Guide for Everyone with Genitals ? I am especially interested in listening to your genital musings, whether they are vagina monologues or ovarian orchestras, at this class, and anytime this weekend.

Elements of Herbalism: Deep Roots

Roots and rhizomes, tubers and corms: the underground parts of plants have been the focus of herbal medicine for hundreds of years. We'll look at the differences between annual, biennial, and perennial roots; discuss optimum harvesting times and best ways to prepare and use the bounty of roots such as burdock, dandelion, echinacea, astragalus, yellow dock, ginseng, poke, ramps, bloodroot, and osha.

Elements of Herbalism: Harvesting

Folkloric information rarely discloses one of the most important aspects of successful herbal medicines: the best time -- of the day and of the year -- to harvest the plant we want to use. In this class we will look at general guidelines for harvesting the roots, barks, leaves, seeds, and flowers of annuals, bienniels, and perennials. We will discuss wildcrafting; and determine best ways to sustainably harvest. We will correlate harvesting with specific uses and preparations. Time, permitting, we will also look at specific herbs and their optimal harvesting circumstances.

Elements of Herbalism: Dosage

Nothing is quite as personal in herbal medicine as dosage. We'll survey the range of dosages currently used by practicing herbalists, looking at their benefits and drawbacks. We'll discuss general dosing strategy, general suggestions for safe doses, specific ranges for tincture, infusion, tea, vinegar, and honey doses, and specifics for a number of herbs. We may also touch on energetic and physiologic aspects of dosing.

Enlightenment and the Wise Woman Tradition

Many seekers speak of "self-love," but the deeper meaning of this truth is elusive. Join Susun Weed for a lively discussion that will sort out the differences between the body as a fixable machine, the body as a repository of toxins, and the body as a perfect manifestation of wholeness. We will uncover the difficulties inherent in attempts to balance, cleanse, and control our health. We will discover the hidden springs from which self-love manifests and flows forth. Are you ready to accept your own perfection?

Favorite Herbs for A High-Energy, High-Intensity Life

If you want to take a big, juicy bite of life, join me for a high-energy session about the five simple herbs that will do the most for you. You will learn which plant gives you unlimited amounts of grounded, focused energy. You will discover the Swiss secret for increasing and maintaining libido, regardless of your age or sex. You'll be introduced to a great-tasting herb that counters inflammation so well it prevents everything from dementia to cancer. You'll find out why my students are in awe of a simple pink flower that grows everywhere. You'll be thrilled by the pain-relieving, mood-improving, infection-fighting powers of a plant used to celebrate Summer Solstice.

Focus on Fertility

Women have relied on herbs to help them conceive, maintain precarious pregnancies, and space their children from the earliest times. Although much of this wisdom has been lost, there remains a body of tried and true plants that powerfully influence our fertility. This presentation will focus on herbal helpers for women who have difficulties beginning or maintaining a pregnancy as well as herbs that can be used as birth control. We will also, time permitting, look at the pros and cons of herbal abortion.

Fabulous Fun with Plant Families

Why did a lynch mob form in front of Lineaus's house when he classified plants? Because he claimed that plants have sex! Join me for a rowdy romp through the sex lives of plants. We'll review a bit of botany and learn the main characteristics of several important plant families. Then -- weather permitting -- we'll go outside and test our skills on the flowering plants around us. Learning herbal medicine through the lens of plant families is one of the most satisfying and effective ways I know to deepen and expand your knowledge.

Herbal Birth Control

Herbs have been used for thousands of years to help prevent unwanted pregnancies. Come share your stories as we discuss the uses of wild yam, wild carrot, blue and black cohosh, ginger and more.

Magical Plants

This fascinating day will delve into the many ways that herbs have been imbued with magical properties. We will talk about fairies and devas, the secret language of the plants, plant spirit medicine, the magic of psychoactive plants, flower essences, mojo bags, flying oils, love charms, and dream pillows. We will come to understand how to combine our own intentions with the energies of the plants to create more of what we want in life. (Day-long magical plants sessions usually include materials for students to make their own dream pillow.)

Medical Marijuana

As herbal medicine becomes more mainstream, so does the idea that marijuana is not a drug but it is a medicine. Do you ever use marijuana in your practice? Is it safe during pregnancy? What are the myths of marijuana? (Marijuana makes you forgetful.) And what does the research tell us? (Small amounts of marijuana increase memory and offset senile demenita.) We will not injest any of this lovely green lady, but do come prepared to join in the discussion.

Menopause Means Change!

What is menopause? To the Wise Woman, a powerful time of change and metamorphosis. We'll learn about the five most important herbs and four most important foods for menopausal women, and discuss problems with black cohosh, wild yam, progesterone creams, tofu, and soy.

Menopause from Three Directions

As you approach (or find your-self in) your menopausal years, who can you trust to tell you what to do to remain hale-hearted, strong-boned, vital and sexy as you grow older? Join acclaimed author and speaker Susun Weed as she highlights three views of menopause: the Scientific belief that it is ovarian failure, leading to diseases caused by lack of estrogen; the Heroic or Alternative Medicine view that menopausal symptoms are caused by underlying imbalances; and the Wise Woman perspective that menopause is "puberty spelled backwards," a natural and healthy change. This lively and entertaining session has garnered rave reviews across the country.

Moon Lodge

A moon lodge is a place where women of all ages come to share the wisdom of the women's mystery stories. We will sing songs honoring the moon and learn some simple dances. Sitting in council, we will pass a talking stick and listen deeply to each other. Please wear you most beautiful clothing and bring objects of beauty for our collective altar. (Yes, these items will be returned.)

My Ally: Motherwort

Since motherwort is a rampant weed in my gardens -- and throughout the world -- I am happy that it has proven such a useful, even if overly abundant, companion. I'll share my experiences using motherwort as a longevity tonic, a heart helper, an easer of emotional distress, and a prime mover in the uterus. Bring your motherwort experiences and questions to add to our pot. This session will include a trance journey to connect with the motherwort deva.

My Herbal Medicine Chest; Part 1

Nourishing herbal infusions are the mainstay of my herbal practice. But I travel with fast-acting tinctures. Take a peek into my medicine bag as I share with you my favorite first-aid remedies: the ones I don't leave home without. Part one will focus on comfrey, plantain, St. Joan's wort, motherwort, and skullcap. You may take either part of this class.

My Herbal Medicine Chest; Part 2

Although I prefer to use herbs to nourish health, sometimes fast action is needed. What tinctures do I consider essential? Join me for part two of My Herbal Medicine Chest. I'll share my thoughts on and experiences with yarrow, echinacea, poke root, and wormwood. You may take either part of this class without taking the other part.

Nourishing Herbal Infusions and Mineral-Rich Vinegars

If optimum nourishment, enduring energy, freedom from pain and chronic problems, and a healthy long life is your goal, this workshop is for you. Simple nourishing herbs -- such as stinging nettle, chickweed, comfrey leaf, red clover, linden, and oatstraw -- brewed in water or apple cider vinegar, can do all the above plus prevent and reverse osteoporosis, replace all the supplements you currently take, counter gum disease, improve the health of your hair and skin, and liven up your sex life.

Nourishing Wholeness the Wise Woman Way

To reach for the stars, we must have our feet firmly on the ground. Nourishing the soul rises up from nourishing the body. Male-centered teachings that regard the body as a hindrance on the path to enlightenment are prevalent. While they may work for men, they are intensely damaging to women's bodies and psyches. Susun Weed will reveal the herbs that nourish body and soul, putting you on the fast track to your heart's desire.

Optimum Nutrition, Beyond Heroics

Confused about food? Eating well is simple when you know which nutrient-dense foods to choose. Find out how easy it is to integrate nourishing herbs into your diet. Discover the importance of dietary fat and the benefits of chocolate. Learn about the health-negative effects of supplements, tofu, sprouts, and raw foods. We'll discover the simple secrets of optimum nutrition, beyond rules, beyond heroics.

The Peaceful Gardener

A Hands-on Herbal Medicine Workshop (and more)
Stop making war in your garden. Join Susun Weed -- acclaimed herbalist, experienced homesteader, and organic gardener -- for a weekend that will change how you relate to plants. From our opening Earth-attunement meditation to the wild salads we will pick, you will find your heart opening as never before to green blessings. From the medicines you will make to the beauty you will receive, you will experience nourishment in a profound new way. We will explore the many ways that weeds heal the soil, guard the soil, help cultivated plants, and help humans, too. With story and song, and an encyclopedic store of plant lore, Susun will delight you and help you count your green blessings.

Phytoestrogens -- Friends or Foes?

Hormones and herbs -- the news is confusing -- if you are at risk for breast cancer should you avoid phytoestrogenic herbs or stock up on them? And what about the rest of us -- is soy a blessing or a bane? We'll fit the facts together for optimum health.

Seven Medicines

This fascinating and informative evening will provide you with the simple, safe tools you need to regain and maintain health with the least harm. The Seven Medicines -- Serenity Medicine, Story Medicine, Energy Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, Herbal Medicine, Pharmaceutical Medicine, and Hi-Tech Medicine -- will show us the benefits of doing nothing, the best ways to collect information, how to dance in the shaman's playground, simple lifestyle choices that extend life, ways to discern the differences between nourishing, tonifying, and stimulating herbs, and the uses and problems of drugs, including supplements, and high-tech diagnosis. Your health, and your life, will never be the same.

The Shamanic Herbalist

What are the characteristics of the shamanic herbalist/healer? What part do magical plants play in their learning and their work? How can we strengthen the shaman, the wise woman, the witch in ourselves and in other women? Our discussion is ongoing; this part will take place in person and in the dreamtime.

Six Steps of Healing

The growing acceptance of "alternative" medicine can lead to confusion. Make sense of medicine with the Six Steps of Healing. It's simple and easy. We'll consider the benefits of doing nothing, examine ways to collect information, delight in the shaman's playground, learn the differences between nourishing, tonifying, and stimulating, and talk about drugs, diagnosis, surgery and high-tech options. Spirit Healing Skills

On the rainbow path of beauty we'll sing and chant and tone. We'll heal our spirits with color, sound, vibration, and earth energies. We'll share a talking stick ceremony, find our auras, experience our chakras, and go on a shamanic journey,. We'll open to the beauty of nature and discover our own psychic abilities. We will explore the value of opening and closing our various chakras. And, of course, we will revel in green blessings.

Spirit and Practice of the Wise Woman Tradition

If you think there's a choice between orthodox medicine and alternative treatments, think again. When you learn to recognize the three traditions of healing -- Scientific, Heroic, and Wise Woman -- you will discover the striking similarities between the MD and the ND. The invisible ways of the Wise Woman -- the oldest form of health care on the planet -- offer a dramatically different approach health and healing. Join acclaimed author Susun S. Weed for a lively session filled with stories, songs, and mind-altering facts. You'll learn how to get health care that really suits you.

Strong Bones, the Wise Woman Way

There's a lot of confusing information on osteoporosis these days. I'll share case studies that document the bone-building power of herbs, latest research indicating calcium supplementation may be counterproductive, and the fruits of my time spent reading, discussing, and researching ways to keep our bones healthy without drugs.

Triple Goddess Herbs

Maidenwort, motherwort, and cronewort: three sacred herbs for women, three dear friends of mine. Come share your experiences with these lovely ladies, and learn more about the many marvelous ways these three aspects of the Goddess can bring green blessings to you throughout your life.

Using Herbs Simply and Safely

Are herbs natural and therefore safe? Or are herbs really drugs in green guise and therefore dangerous? Are standardized extracts safer? Are combinations of herbs necessary? What about homeopathy? Whether your interest in herbs is new or well-seasoned, this talk will help you understand how to get the most out of herbal medicine -- with the least risk.

Walk in Beauty

A herb walk with a difference. Learn to use the Wise Woman tradition in all the work you do with plants. Using a drum-driven shamanic trance, we will attune ourselves to the earth and breathe with the plants. Then, dancing in give-away with the green nations, we will walk barefoot on the Mother, absorbing boundless grace and infinite healing. Our time together will culminate with another healing trance. We will not identify anything.

Weeds in Your Garden? Bite Back!

What do you do with the weeds in your garden? Herbalist Susun S. Weed turns them into medicines and gourmet foods. So can you! It's easy, simple, safe, free, and fun. If you are intrigued with herbs, curious about herbal medicine, or just looking for a way to get even with those weeds, join us for an entertaining session filled with practical information and a pinch of green magic.

Wild Woman Weed Walk

Calling all wild women and wild men. Let's wander a while in the garden of Eden and see what tastes good. We'll sing some songs, share a shamanic trance, breathe with the plants, and connect with the devas and fairies. If we are clever, we will return with additions to lunch.
