Author bio:  Susun S. Weed is recognized as the voice of the Wise Woman Tradition, a founding grandmother of the herbal renaissance, and the originator of the concept "complementary medicine." Ms. Weed maintains an active, worldwide teaching schedule including teaching at venues such as Yale Nurse Midwifery School, American College of Nurse Midwives, Bastyr Naturopathic College, Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, American Botanical Council, Weg der Mitte (Berlin), and Waikato College of Herbal Studies in New Zealand. Susun has taught at every women's herbal conference offered, many created by her past apprentices, including Green Nations, Northeast Women's Herbal Conference, Southeast  Women's Herbal Conference, Midwest Women's Herbal Conference, Red Earth, Pacific Northwest Women's Herbal Conference, and California Women's Herbal Conference. She has been featured at Goddesses in the Redwoods, Goddess Spirit Rising, Australian Goddess Conference, and the Alaska Goddess Conference. Susun Weed is a contributor to the Routledge International Encyclopedia of Women's Studies, peer-reviewed journals, and popular magazines. Her six books are all still in print —in multiple languages — and are considered health-care "bibles."

Susun Weed's Biography

Susun S. Weed has no official diplomas of any kind; she left high school in her junior year to pursue studies in mathematics and artificial intelligence at UCLA and she left college in her junior year to pursue life. Ms. Weed began studying herbal medicine in 1965 when she was living in Manhattan while pregnant with her daughter, Justine. In addition to her writing, Ms Weed trains apprentices, oversees the work of more than 2000 correspondence students, coordinates the activities of the Wise Woman Center, mentors students, initiates green witches (she is a High Priestess of Dianic Wicca), and is a member of the Sisterhood of the Shields and a Peace Elder. She was adopted into the Wolf Clan of the Seneca Nation by Grandmother Twyla Nitsch. She keeps dairy goats and makes wonderful cheeses to accompany her incredible homemade sourdough bread. Her daughter, Justine Smythe, and granddaughter, Monica Jean Smythe, are an important part of her work, play, and life.
