Herbal Mouth Care – the Wise Woman Way
2 CD Set by Susun S Weed
CD review by Kim Kuper
As my family’s herbalist and main care-giver, I usually feel pretty confident in my ability to take charge of our health. For life’s inevitable bumps and bruises, out comes the comfrey oil. When winter’s cold winds blow, we are glad for our pantry stocked with Echinacea, Elder and Mullein. From burns to upset stomachs, we feel protected.
This confidence falters however, when it comes to our teeth. For me, dental issues have always seemed a mysterious process only able to be understood by a trained dentist. Because of this, I was most eager to learn about the possibility of a more natural approach to our teeth care.
In this 2 CD set from the Green Nations Gathering, herbalist Susun Weed starts off with a moving chant to our grandmothers and then jumps right into the topic at hand. It felt good to know that oral well-being seemed as strange of a thing to fathom for Susun as it had been for me. As with other aspects of our health; we can be as obsessed as her friend who went everywhere with a toothbrush around her neck, or as lackadaisical as not even bothering to brush.
Interestingly, among the teachers and mentors that set Susun on her path, a dentist, by the name of Weston Price was instrumental in showing her the effects of nutrition on our overall well-being. Price’s book documented the changes that occurred to the dental arch and facial features of various groups of people as white flour and sugar were introduced to their diet.
Teeth are a gift from our mother, built up while in the womb, and because of this, women especially need to get proper minerals for what they lose during pregnancy and lactation.Dairy is essential for this process – especially organic as dairy absorbs pesticides and herbicides more readily than other food sources.
Susun explains misconceptions about calcium supplements, along with the dangers of coffee, juice, fluoride and various foods to our teeth. Often things that we think of as being good for us, such as unfermented soy, is a terrible drain on our calcium supply.
Her discussions on these CD’s go into lots of info on dental health, including her take on x-rays, mercury fillings and overuse of antibiotics. Learn about the role of bacteria, infusions, salt water, and twigs from trees that you probably have growing in your own backyard.
Especially useful is the information on dealing with more acute situations as opposed to just maintenance. I was happy to learn that there are many readily available tinctures that can help with these types of issues as well.
Through her down to earth style, Susun is able to demystify oral health in much the same way she has done with her other teachings.
