II Aunt Rose and Mary and Me

Actually she was my great Aunt Rosina, but we called her Aunt Rose.
She was my grandmother’s half sister and she lived with two other
half-sisters just up the street from my grandmother.the art of Biljana Banchotova Rosina, Julia
and Florence. We called them The Old Maids as in “I’m going up to
visit the Old Maids for awhile.” That was what the adults said. What
I said was: “Mom, can I go up and visit Aunt Rose? Please?”

Part of Aunt Rose’s work was for the Catholic Diocese, repairing and
restoring statues for the churches. She would replace plaster fingers,
repair plaster noses, and her repainting jobs were simply divine. The
eyes Aunt Rose painted were always so beautiful. When I would visit
her home I was always excited to see who would be there in their statue
form: St. Francis over in the corner, taller than I, St. Joseph on a
pedestal, the saints, etc. Always Mary.. Statuary
became very exciting. When Aunt Rose died - too young - I received a
small statue of Mary she had painted.

I kept it on my altar because I found it beautiful but I never worked
with Mary’s energy until one day. I had been wishing to reclaim my
name, its power, and so sat in front of the statue of Mary and out
loud, said something like, “Mary I would like to work with you but I
don’t know how to call you. No offense, but I think of you as a kind
of wimp. Please help me. How can I call you? What is the chant?“

I shuddered at having said it and waited for a response.

It wasn’t long at all before I heard a distinct voice sound say with
perhaps just a bit of attitude, “Well just look at me.”

Perhaps it was the time of day, the gloaming. Slowly I looked again
and anew at the Mary before me and realized that she was standing on
the moon! And I sudden with sudden clarity of vision that She was not
stepping on the snake, She was actually walking with the snake~~! It
feels particularly wonderful that I reclaim this memory of Mary, of Her
walking with snakes. The matrifocal religions that pre-dated the
Judeo-Christian religions held serpents in sacredness, and they lived
in the temples with the women in many cultures. As town and cities
grew, the serpents’ relationship with humans also had to do with being
ratters for grain storage. So the serpent moved into the household,
even if distantly. As the people lived an earth-based religion, that is
they took their spiritual inspiration from the cycles and the beauty of
natural life, they looked for symbolism in this partnership. The
serpent who sheds her skin, rich with metaphors, including the neverending, ever spiraling paths of our lifetimes. It is no coincidence that the next creation story,
Adam and Eve, had a snake cast in an evil role. Myths were being
rewritten, truths altered. It only takes a few generations to change
the stories of the people. Fortunately, as women we are entirely capable of
remembering the ancient stories.

Immediately I wanted to write a chant to Her. So, I began – She walks
with snakes, She stands on the moon. That worked for me. the song was
born almost instantly.

She walks with snakes, She stands on the moon,
She walks with snakes, She stands on the moon,
She walks with snakes, She stands on the moon,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, stands on the moon (repeat!)

the art of Biljana BanchotovaTouch me with Your hands of light,
Crown of stars to bless the night,
Mother Mary, give me sight, that I may see....” (start over)

I’ve heard from women and men who love this chant! Mothers say their
kids love to dance to it. My favorite story about She Walks With
Snakes was the one where my friend told me she played the chant for her
brother-in-law, a Franciscan monk; he couldn’t get it out of his mind... ...
I love thinking of She Walks With Snakes as an earworm. Thanks, Mary,

It wasn’t until years later that I began to explore the Sacred Heart of
Mary. Here is an image of Mary showing us, offering us Her Sacred
Heart. Mary’s healing comes from compassion, very much like Kwan Yin.
And like a bodhisatva, Mary offers the earned wisdom of Her own pain,
which is transformed into compassion, and She bathes us in it. It
feels like such a blessing to spend time in the Sacred Heart of Mary.
