Holding Your Baby - Born to be a Cuddle Bug

Baby
Throughout the 40 weeks in mama’s womb, baby is being held. Warm, comfort, energy, love. After birth, the best way to continue that environment of safety, peace and contentment, is to continue to hold your baby. Cuddling close, skin-to-skin, is the best way to ease the transition into the outside world.
When a baby is held, they will physically, psychologically and emotionally relax, producing chemicals in their little bodies that keep them healthy and content. Not only will this help to alleviate the shock of the bright, cold, loud world, it will also regulate breathing, regulate body temperature, and encourage nursing.
Touching a baby is instinctual. Without a second thought people want to reach out and stroke a cheek or kiss a head. Follow your instincts. Nuzzling your little cuddle bug can relieve stress for both you and your child. As your newborn grows, continue to hold, touch, and cuddle. Skin to skin can be accomplished in a warm bath together, a soothing massage before bed, or a tender nursing session while gazing into each others’ eyes.
Remember you can also cuddle your baby while getting work, chores, or tasks done. Baby wearing is a great way to keep your little one close to your skin, heartbeat, and breath while on the move. Baby wearing can be done well into toddlerhood. Research the different slings and wraps available and see what fits you and your baby the best. You may want to try a few different carriers as your baby grows.
Your baby was born to be a cuddle bug, so take advantage of the benefits of touch and fill your time together with hugs and smiles. Remember, you can never hold a baby too much!
